I have not explored the art-form of short stories to any great degree (even though it is the kind of small-scale form that I tend to like). I've probably most enjoyed the short stories of Jeffrey Archer, who is better-known for his novels but who I think is stronger as a short-story writer. I also enjoyed a number of the stories in Mark Helprin's collection Ellis Island and Other Stories.
